Maverick tech mogul, John McAfee has made headlines again this time with his claim to launch a Bitcoin backed debit card. He recently tweeted an image of the said card declaring that it will be launched soon and would allow payments in Bitcoin anywhere in the world where Visa is accepted.
Whether this claim is true or would add to the growing list of McAfee-propelled hoaxes (the latest one being his claim to reveal the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto) is yet to be seen. However, with his excited tweets, McAfee is trying to pass this one off as a genuine product in the making.
In case such a product sees the light of the day, it would be revolutionary not only for the payment cards industry but also for cryptocurrency in general since the medium of payment for this one would be Bitcoin.
Coming to the proposed design of the card, it has the American flag as its background with shattered shackles printed in between the stripes painting an overall theme of freedom. The star field is embossed with pictorial representations of technology and human civilization. On the rear, the card has a QR Code using which people would be enabled to accept crypto payments directly into their wallet.
Doubtful Aspects of the Bitcoin Debit Card
Certain features on the card, however, make it hard to believe that it’s a real product. For instance, McAfee’s face is plastered over the American flag on the right corner, and the card also boasts of quirky slogans, like “Get your soul back” and “Freedom Lover” that make the card look more of a plug for McAfee himself rather than a legit debit card.
Whether or not this turns out to be a hoax, the crypto community has nothing to lose. In fact, it can very well benefit from the publicity. After all, for all his quirky ways and unorthodox life, John McAfee is a force to reckon with in the blockchain and crypto industry.
